In a world of small plates, craft cocktails and curious obsessions with beets and sliders, sometimes it’s a refreshing blast to eat solid home cooked food. Penny Ann’s Cafe is an ode to less complicated times, roadside diners with honest food and friendly service.
The menu is peppered with nods to Americana, but my pick of the bunch is the grilled reuben sandwich ($6.99) – one of the heights of the epicurean world in SLC. The sandwich starts with fresh corned beef then layers on zingy sauerkraut, swiss
cheese, & thousand island dressing. This handful of flavor is then grilled to perfection on marbled rye.
You can keep your tapas restaurants and fusion cuisine – just leave me with this gloriously messy sandwich.
